My technical career began at age 14 when I became a TV repairman. I know that child labor laws have ended a lot of terrible abuses, but that job, underage and under minimum wage, was one of the best opportunities I ever had.

I went back into electronics in my 20's after varied occupations such as theatrical lighting and organic farming. Hardware design led me to embedded systems programming, then to structured programming in C, and now I work principally in Java and enterprise systems programming. This is a very broad range of application domains and includes many domains and programming languages and technologies not mentioned here.

The shift to Object Oriented development has been as profound as learning Structured Programming. Too many developers, even those trained only in OO languages, use those OO languages to write purely procedural code. In doing so, they miss out on a lot of the power and brevity of OO languages.

Now, much of my work is consulting and coaching. I can still write code, but there's more benefit for you if I help your team be more effective. And the most effective way I know to do that is to work with them, hands on, with your project. See http://idiacomputing.com/ to learn more.
